Today's College Students are Loaded

College students around the nation are flocking back to campus to juggle academics, off campus employment and social pleasures. Working on a college campus is probably one of the greatest places to work if you desire regular doses of intellectual stimulation, cultural immersion and wide-eyed optimism.

I'm not ashamed to say that I depend on the college students surrounding me to keep me up to speed with current trends, purchasing habits and marketing tactics of young adults. As you might imagine, mine eyes have seen the glory, and I've learned a heck of a lot over the last five years.

One of the most liberating things I've learned is: college students aren't always BROKE! Gayla Martindale for StateUniversity.com took a look at the "Spending Habits of College Students," and discovered that the culinary fare of Ramen Noodles, Vienna sausages, and the hot and spicy sardines of old, are no longer the mainstay for many college students today.

She claims the changing demographics of today's students is the culprit. "Less than half (43%) of college students are 18-21. In fact, she says, the typical college student is in their mid-twenties, either lives at home or on campus, and has a job. Students don't expect to complete college in four consecutive years anymore, and many fluctuate between full-time and part-time study over a period of 5 to 7 years. The older the student, the more money he or she generally has."

So where are all the greenbacks going? Martindale says college students are spending a great deal of money on eletronics, technology, entertainment and personal care products. Specific stats indicat that students spend their money like this:

-- $3 billion annually on movies, DVDs, music and video games
-- $474 million on music sales
-- $658 million on theater tickets
-- $341 million on games
-- $600 million to buy dvds | $326 million to rent
-- $5.5 billion on alcohol, not to mention cigerettes
-- $4 billion personal care products
-- $5 billion on clothes and shoes

So these once penniless pupils are now bionic billion dollar spenders who now represent over $60 billion dollars in buying power, according to
Martindale's findings. Young people with power...I love it!
